Community-oriented, highly walkable enclave in the heart of suburban Philadelphia
Initially settled in the late 1690s and formally established in the mid-1870s, Jenkintown is an immensely walkable suburb approximately 10 miles to the north of Philadelphia’s Center City.
Though small compared to the Cheltenham and Abington Townships that border it, Jenkintown is a bustling borough of roughly 4,500 residents. Old York Road serves as the town’s main commercial corridor and is within a short walking distance to every residence in the community.
The tight-knit community does feature a surprisingly eclectic collection of homes. The majority of single-family homes occupy larger-than-average lots. Prices range from $350,000 for more modest three-bedroom homes to over $700,00 for larger residences with historical or architectural significance. For those interested in lower maintenance living, Jenkintown does include townhome and condo options.
Though the area is predominantly single-family dwellings set on large lots with plenty of green space in between, every home is a short walk to the town's primary commercial district and secondary retail spaces in neighboring Abington Township.
Old York Road is where the retail and dining action happens in Jenkintown, and the epicenter is at the intersection of Old York and West Avenue. It's here you’ll find the best of the bustling borough—everything from fine dining to casual fare, boutique shops to everyday services.
Marzano Ristorante serves up fresh Italian dishes. Across the street, The Drake Tavern specializes in American pub food and microbrews. The West Avenue Grille is casual breakfast, and lunch. Established in 1906, Rosnov Jewelers is a multi-generational shop typical of the many businesses with deep roots in this part of Montgomery County.
As with the shopping and dining, there’s no shortage of activities in the Borough of Jenkintown. The Hiway Theater is a vintage, single-screen, arthouse movie theater that dates back to the early 1900s.
The Jenkintown Farmers Market occurs at the borough’s Town Square and includes the popular Tuesday Night Summer Concert Series. Jenkintown’s Festival of the Arts is the town's biggest annual event and arguably one of Montgomery Country’s largest outdoor festivals.
